Staging a Kirby kitchen without losing the sink

The mistake is to start with the crackle. If you draw Kirby weather first, the kettle becomes an afterthought and the Fantastic Four stop being a family. We start with the sink: who stands with their back to the window, who dries, who has already left the room.

In Hawthorpe the actual studio sink is too small to photocopy. We measure collectors’ kitchens from photographs they send — height of the taps, colour of the tiles — then invent only the chrome that could have been sold in 1964. A rocket-shaped pepper mill is allowed. A hovering dashboard is not.

When the crackle arrives, it has to earn the panel. Steam from the kettle can carry it. A force-field can bead water off a plate. Johnny’s flame should never be larger than the birthday candle unless the script has already told us the baby is in another room. That rule has saved more covers than any reference file of cosmic rays.
